The Gretna boys basketball team is having a fantastic 2018-2019 season. The Dragons came into the week with a 7-1 record with their only loss coming to then no.4 rated Bennington on a last second shot.
With two games on the schedule for the week Gretna made a rare trip across the river to take on Lewis Central High school in Council Bluffs, IA on Tuesday, January 8.
The game was close early with the Lewis Central Titians taking a slim 10-8 lead after the first quarter. Gretna though managed to battle back and take a 19-17 lead before the break.
In the second half Gretna was able to show their class as they pulled away in the third with 16 points and scored another 19 points in the fourth to win the game 54-44. No individual stats were provided.
After the road win over Lewis Central Gretna got to play host to Nebraska City on Friday, January 11.
The Pioneers were able to hang with Gretna early with the Dragons only able to take an 11-10 lead after one quarter. This close battle didn’t last with the Dragons exploding for 24 points in the second quarter to go up 35-18 at the break.
In the second half Gretna put on a clinic scoring 20 points in the third and 16 points in the fourth while holding Nebraska City to just 14 points total for the half. The impressive performance was enough for the Dragons to win the game 71-32.
Gretna was led by Ely Doble with 14 points and Tre’ Mikkelson with 12 points. Trevor Marshall and Clay Frost both added 8 points, Hershal Vusich had 6 points, Colby Scholl and Zach Weise both had 4 points, Hunter League, Chris Atkinson, and Blake Rose each had 3 points, and Blake Podany, Landon Graber, and Ty Perkins each had 2 points.
Gretna is now 9-1 on the year.
