The Bennington Elite 18U softball team became the USA State Runner-up in Hastings on June 17. Coach Jessica Boever said it was a great weekend for the girls, who played well as a team defensively and hit well to put numbers on the board.
Kyleigh Boever pitched all six games of the tournament. Prior to the championship game, the team had only given up two runs all weekend. On the final day of the tournament, Bennington beat the McCook Rebels 8-0, putting them
into the losers bracket.
McCook then won their way back up to the finals. They struggled with hitting Boever the first game and came out with bunt after bunt. This rattled Bennington enough to give up four runs in the first inning.oThe girls fought back but came up short in the finals, losing 3-6. Then the final game injuries started to hinder Elite and they ended up losing 2-6.
“It was definitely a great effort by the entire team, taking only 10 healthy players and making it all the way to the final game,” Coach Boever said.
The following weekend, the Bennington Elite team played in the USSSA State Warm-Up and were once again Runner Up. Still working through injuries from the previous weekend, as Halle Hanish, the catcher, was out with a pulled hamstring, Daisha DeLancey was there to help the team by catching well.
The team is heading next to the Ringneck Tournament in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
